The Phenomenology of Spirit is perhaps the most decisive text in the history of German idealism. It was in this text that Hegel achieved, albeit in a provisional form, the structure of his mature thought that has come to be known as Absolute Idealism. It was this Absolute Idealism that furnished a point of critique for various 19th-century authors such as Schelling, Kierkegaard, Feuerbach, and Marx. This seminar has a particular interest in the religious dimension of Hegel's thought and will reflect upon the powerful tensions within the post-Hegelian philosophical legacy. The readings will include the Preface, selections from the Master-Slave dialectic, and the chapter on religion. The seminar will meet in Room 3 of the Divinity Faculty at the following times:
Wednesday, October 16, 4-6pm
