On the 7th of March at 5 pm (UK time), the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Platonism will host Dr Paolo Livieri to deliver his talk, "The Good as an Idea. Notes on Hegel’s Definition of the Principle of Ethics". The meeting will take place on Zoom.

From an analysis of the closing paragraphs of Hegel’s Science of Logic, it seems that the notion of “Good” opposes the notion of “Duty.” Contrary to the common-sense understanding of the principle of ethics, Hegel suggests that a distinctly philosophical approach to the notion of Good turns the Good into an Idea, which ostensibly lies beyond moral commitment and obligation. This definition can affect our approach to ethics, as the Idea of Good neutralizes notions such as those of design, project, and task.
We will try to show the real nature of the Idea of Good by means of an investigation into Hegel’s logic in connection to Jacobi’s philosophy of religion and Aristotle’s metaphysics.
